MBTA Now Offers No-Contact Pay System for Rides

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has introduced a “Tap to Ride” system, allowing passengers to use no-contact payment methods such as credit and debit cards, smartphones, and smartwatches. Starting Aug. 1, these payments will be accepted on buses, Green Line and Mattapan Line trolleys, and at all gated subway stations. To use Tap to Pay:

Step 1. Choose Credit/debit card: Ensure your card has the contactless symbol. Phone/watch: Set up a card in your mobile wallet. Note: CharlieCards cannot be used on new readers. Use them at fare gates or fare boxes.

Step 2. Tap Tap your card or device on the Charlie reader at the fare gate or bus/train door.

Step 3. Ride Wait for the green “Go” screen, then board.

This upgrade aims to reduce wait times and offer greater payment flexibility. Traditional CharlieCards will still be accepted. Contactless payment will initially be available only on buses and subways, with plans to expand to other modes later. It’s ideal for riders who don’t have a CharlieCard or prefer to pay as they go.

Keep using your current payment method if you:

• Pay for transit using cash

• Use a weekly or monthly pass

• Ride the Commuter Rail or ferry

• Receive a pass from your employer or school
